Valves
There are several types of valves commonly used in fire fighting systems. Here are some of the key types:
- Alarm Valves: Alarm valves are used to detect water flow in the system and trigger alarms in case of a fire emergency.
- Check Valves: Check valves allow water to flow in one direction only, preventing backflow in the system.
- Ball Valves: These valves have a spherical disc that controls the flow of water by opening or closing with a quarter-turn of the valve handle.
- Pressure Reducing Valves: These valves are used to reduce the pressure in the system to a safe and manageable level.
- Pressure Relief Valves: These valves are designed to relieve excess pressure in the system to prevent damage to pipes and equipment.
- Deluge Valves: Deluge valves are used in fire protection systems where a large volume of water is required quickly. Typically used in high-hazard areas where rapid fire suppression is necessary.
- Butterfly Valves: These valves have a flat disc that is positioned in the center of the pipe. When the valve is closed, the disc is turned perpendicular to the flow, and when open, it is parallel to the flow. It is used in HVAC systems, water treatment plants, and industrial processes for on/off and throttling control.
- Gate Valves: Gate valves are used to fully open or close the flow of water by lifting or lowering a gate inside the valve body. Commonly used in applications where a straight-line flow with minimal restriction is desired, such as in pipelines and large water systems.
